She set out on a quest to understand how scientists discover new species—where do they find them, and how do they know when it’s something new? She started studying mites, moved on to mammals, and ended up in mushrooms. She spent hours in the woods and just like real scientists, spent even more time indoors with a microscope. The end result was becoming part of a team that found a type of chanterelle never before named or described.

The role of altered states of consciousness in the production of geometric and figurative art by prehistoric cultures in Africa and Europe has been hotly debated. Helvenston and Bahn have tried to refute the most famous hypothesis, Lewis-Williams’ neuropsychological model, by claiming that appropriate visual hallucinations required the ingestion of LSD, psilocybin, or mescaline, while arguing that none of these compounds were available to the cultures in question. We present here mycological arguments that tell another story. A prehistoric worldwide distribution of the mushroom genus Psilocybe, and therefore of psilocybin, is supported by the existence of endemic species in America, Africa, and Europe, the disjunct distribution of sister species, and the possibility of long-distance spore dispersal. It is more difficult to point to instances of actual prehistoric ritual use in Africa and Europe, but there are a growing number of suggestive findings.
NOTE: this talk is the very first presentation of this story which stems from an important paper just published in 2016, of the same title, and by the authors Tom Froese, Gastón Guzmán, and Laura Guzmán-Dávalos.

In this crash course workshop, Peter will present a streamlined method for growing an abundance of edible and medicinal mushrooms for low to no dough. At its core, this process revolves around cultivating a mycelium inoculum in a liquid medium, as opposed to agar-filled petri dishes (which are more standard). Two decades have passed since the publication of Mushrooms: Poisons and Panaceas. The presentation is a critical review of more recently described toxic mushrooms and various ways that mushrooms might harm us. This includes the "little white mushroom of Yunnan," the stories behind Angel Wings and Man-on-Horseback, the neurological effects of morel gluttony, the inherent dangers of foraging and others. These are told from a perspective of a pathologist, sometimes with a dark sense of humor.
