Fungal diversity in Chile: Gondwanan Paradise on Earth
Fungi are not an exception when it comes to conservation action for biodiversity. Moreover, at The Fungi Foundation we believe they are critical for the outcome of conservation at large. Putting fungal public policy in place is a task never undertaken until an NGO from Chile committed to getting political justice for Kingdom Fungi. Our work also takes on the task of working on the symbolical level of public perception of the fungi kingdom. To secure the future of fungi we need sound science, legislative action and creative transformation of our perception/understanding of our dependence on fungi for life. The latter is being developed through a pioneer project to integrate art, science and citizens at large in conjunction with Fundación Armar. The results are promising!

Origins of a Mycologist

How can an ordinary person not trained as a scientist become a mycologist and get involved with research? And how far can you take it as a citizen scientist? Writer Jill Riddell gave it a try. She set out on a quest to understand how scientists discover new species—where do they find them, and how do they know when it’s something new? She started studying mites, moved on to mammals, and ended up in mushrooms. She spent hours in the woods and just like real scientists, spent even more time indoors with a microscope. The end result was becoming part of a team that found a type of chanterelle never before named or described.

The Creeping Garden
A real life science fiction movie exploring a world creeping right beneath our feet, where time and space are magnified and intelligence redefined. The Creeping Garden is a multi award winning feature length creative documentary exploring the work of fringe scientists, mycologists and artists, and their relationship with the extraordinary plasmodial slime mould.
The slime mould is being used to explore biological-inspired design, emergence theory, unconventional computing and robot controllers, much of which borders on the world of science fiction. But as well as exploring the slime mould in the lab, the film also travels out into the wild, hunting for the organisms in their natural habitat.
Co-directed by artist film-maker Tim Grabham and writer and film curator Jasper Sharp, the film follows in the unconventional footsteps of Grabham's previous feature 'KanZeOn' and Sharps fascination with the extended world of mycology. With an original soundtrack composed by celebrated musician and producer Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth, Werner Herzog's 'Grizzly Man') this is a unique exploration into a hitherto untapped subject matter, observing and immersing the audience into the worlds of the observers and the observed.
Contributors included Mark Pragnell, an amateur mycologist with a keen interest in slime moulds; Bryn Dentinger, Head of Mycology at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, who introduces the viewer to theFungarium, the largest archive of fungi specimens in the world, which has its own special section devoted to myxomycetes; Dr. Tim Boon, Head of Research & Public History at The Science Museum, London, and the author of Films of Fact: A History of Science Documentary on Film and Television, who details the history of cinema and its characteristics of time and image magnification to explore and explain science to the general public, specifically the film Magic Myxies (1931) by the pioneering scientific filmmaker Percy Smith; Professor Andrew Adamatzky of the Centre for Unconventional Computing at University of the West of England in Bristol, whose research into slime moulds as a biological substrate for computation has led tofurther research at the university into using slime moulds to perform complex computational tasks and tomodel road transport networks and human emotional expressions; and Dr Klaus-Peter Zauner of the University of Southampton, who has constructed a robot controlled by slimemoulds.

Mycoremediation: From the Field to the Lab and Back Again

Fungi are the great healers of Earth, upholding an array of unique ecological roles that no bacteria, plant, or animal can match. In this presentation, Peter will show how these natural functions of fungi can be intentionally worked with by humans in a variety of ways to mitigate pollution, restore degraded lands, build soil, strengthen ecosystems, and create cleaner water. From home-scale techniques that anyone can practice, to insights into the tools behind broadscale remediation efforts, this talk will provide you with a solid foundation in the theory and methods behind the rapidly evolving and exciting field of mycoremediation.

Origins of Fungi II. Of the Hyphosphere: Fungi from the Beginning
Fungi have been argued to be among the first multi-cellular organisms to have evolved on Earth—an ancient kin from which plants and animals descended long ago. Today, fungi are found in nearly all habitats, forming complex symbioses with plants and animals, and helping balance the overall health of dynamic ecological webs. In this presentation, Peter will walk through the fascinating landmarks in fungal evolution that have led to these current collaborations and detail how integral fungi have become to all aspects of life. From the heart of Antarctica, to the bottom of the ocean, to the soils of the Colorado plateau, Peter will help expose these hidden connections in the fungal history of Earth. The result just may change the way you think about fungi and the world at large.

Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World
News headlines, such as “Magic mushrooms expand the mind” (Time, January 2012) and “What your brain looks like on magic mushrooms” (Telegraph, UK, November 2014), give us a deceptively simple picture. This picture implies that at least most people will encounter but one canonical experience after ingesting psilocybin mushrooms. When you really get down to it, the details of experiences that people have after ingesting psilocybin are at least as varied as the individuals who may encounter them. We will review findings from laboratory studies as well as large-sample, online surveys conducted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine that investigate the nature and inherent individual differences in both peak mystical experiences and profoundly challenging experiences that were encountered after ingesting psilocybin. We will also explore the relationship that these reported experiences might have to changes in the brain that may result from ingestion of psilocybin.

"A New Understanding: The Science of Psilocybin"

This film explores the research and benefits of using psilocybin to dramatically reduce the anxiety of death in terminally ill cancer patients. Last year, Robert was an attendee of the festival and spoke on a panel regarding medicinal Psilocybin research. More about the movie: Over the past decade, government-sanctioned, FDA-approved, human psychedelic medical research with psilocybin has been conducted at Johns Hopkins University, New York University and UCLA by The Heffter Research Institute. The research serves as the narrative backbone for the documentary. The film presents an intimate look into the lives of several terminally ill cancer patients participating in the studies and opens an intriguing discourse of the dying process and our role as a society in the process. By informing current misconceptions about psychedelic medicines, A New Understanding utilizes a collection of accomplished minds to discuss psilocybin’s role in culture, evolution, mystical states, and even life itself.

There will be a discussion beforehand and a chance to ask questions.

Realizing Transformation : Intention and Integration; The Alchemical Gold of Plant Medicine Wisdom

What I have learned after treating and following up with literally hundreds of patient/journeyers the past ten years is that conscious and sustained attention to Continuing Care or Integration is the SINGLE best predictor for a successful or positive outcome for those using the psychedelic plant medicine Ibogaine in the treatment of addiction. We will explore the importance of Intention ( set and setting) and Integration ) as key ( and often overlooked) elements of a comprehensive treatment protocol.
We will discuss, the essential elements of a successful Continuing Care program? For so many the ibogaine journey is a life changing, occasionally overwhelming experience that after years of addiction can not only be beautiful and transforming but also frightening and dramatic! A focused program of Continuing Care will include an acknowledgement of this profound and transformational experience as well as offering a panoply of tools to process, and to integrate the lessons learned with this sacred medicine! We will address the interface between the powerful ibogaine journey ( i.e. finding one s own language to retain and integrate the experience), and what i call addiction treatment 101 (i.e nurturing and developing a support system, identifying triggers, development of coping skills to overcome said triggers, and making powerful and often difficult lifestyle changes). We will talk about the unique ibogaine 'window of well-being'. the typically 8-12 week period following treatment which opens remarkable access both to our inner angels and demons, along with a newfound facility to fearlessly meet and learn from them.

Mycotopia: Pushing the Paradigm, Infantry Cells, and Militant Mycology

The earth is more fragile now than ever. How can we tap deeper into the power of fungi to create powerful new solutions to many of the challenges that we face over the next millennia? Dreaming of a world free from starvation, global pandemics, and warfare? Fortunately we have received a transmission from the future just in time, and humans have worshipped mushrooms many times before, but it will take a modern team of empathetic leaders, a new political party, wielding disruptive, mycelial technologies, or game changing ways that fungi can change our world forever. From primary education of basic mushroom identification to militant mycologists targeting wood chip piles, Cotter examines the levels and connections needed to see this movement materialize, and suggests blueprints for improving and integrating fungi on every level, creating a powerful coexistence that is sure to empower and enhance the lives of all organisms that call planet Earth their home. - See more at: http://www.marioninstitute.org/connecting-for-change/events/tradd-cotter-presents-mycotopia-fungal-solutions-global-starvation-poll#sthash.WRSXWp7R.dpuf

On the origin of the genus Psilocybe and its potential ritual use in ancient Africa and Europe

The role of altered states of consciousness in the production of geometric and figurative art by prehistoric cultures in Africa and Europe has been hotly debated. Helvenston and Bahn have tried to refute the most famous hypothesis, Lewis-Williams’ neuropsychological model, by claiming that appropriate visual hallucinations required the ingestion of LSD, psilocybin, or mescaline, while arguing that none of these compounds were available to the cultures in question. We present here mycological arguments that tell another story. A prehistoric worldwide distribution of the mushroom genus Psilocybe, and therefore of psilocybin, is supported by the existence of endemic species in America, Africa, and Europe, the disjunct distribution of sister species, and the possibility of long-distance spore dispersal. It is more difficult to point to instances of actual prehistoric ritual use in Africa and Europe, but there are a growing number of suggestive findings.
NOTE: this talk is the very first presentation of this story which stems from an important paper just published in 2016, of the same title, and by the authors Tom Froese, Gastón Guzmán, and Laura Guzmán-Dávalos.
We are very excited to hear this groundbreaking work by Laura!

Liquid Culture Will Change the World (Of Cultivation)

In this crash course workshop, Peter will present a streamlined method for growing an abundance of edible and medicinal mushrooms for low to no dough. At its core, this process revolves around cultivating a mycelium inoculum in a liquid medium, as opposed to agar-filled petri dishes (which are more standard). With this liquid medium, the majority of the cost, complexity, and risks of mushroom cultivation can be easily avoided. How is this possible? Come to the presentation to find out.

Human-Fungal Relations: Past, Present, and Future

Mycology is proving itself to be a nearly inexhaustible field for innovation. As new discoveries are constantly being made, there seems to be no end to what fungi can offer humans, their communities, and the environments they touch. However, these revelations are only the most recent chapter in the long-standing history that humans have shared with fungi. In this presentation, Peter will explore the depth and breadth of ethomycological history, from the centrality of micro and macro fungi in many prehistoric cultures to their increasingly significant influences on modern society and the future of technological design. Obscure and ancient practices with fungi will be presented alongside cutting edge cultivation techniques to show that working with fungi is not only  important, but integral to the human story.
